Foil Drive has had the foil assist market largely to itself for several years. Built in Australia, adopted globally, it became the shorthand for the entire category — you didn't own a foil assist, you owned a Foil Drive. That changes this month. RIIFT, a Western Australian company fronted by Kane De Wilde and backed by 15-plus board manufacturers, launched at the Australian Wave Sports Industry show in September 2026. The question isn't just whether RIIFT is good. It's whether it represents a fundamentally different approach to the problem — and whether that approach suits you.

This piece is not a hands-on review. RIIFT is days old as a public product. What it is, is a structured comparison of design philosophy, architecture, specifications, and use-case fit — the information serious foilers actually need before the hype cycle fully sets in.

Two Australians, two different problems solved

Foil Drive was built as a retrofit solution. The insight was simple and powerful: the millions of foil setups already out there could be electrified without buying a new board. A self-contained battery and motor unit that installs into a trench in the board's hull, pairs with any existing mast, and leaves no permanent alteration. It democratised foil assist for an entire generation of riders who had already invested in gear.

RIIFT starts from a different question: what if you didn't compromise on the board's design at all? Their cassette system is patent-protected and built into the board from the shaper's table. The battery housing becomes a structural element, the bottom of the board is flush, and the electronics distribute differently — each battery pack is a complete unit containing its own ESC and receiver, not just cells. It's a manufacturer-first model, not a consumer-retrofit model.

How each system is actually built

Foil Drive Gen 2 comes in two form factors: the Assist MAX (50mm deep unit, up to 594Wh, AUD $7,750) and the Assist Slim (35mm deep, up to 241Wh, AUD $7,000). Both use a separate motor pod that clips onto any standard mast, a wireless V3 throttle controller, and a battery that sits in the trench with the ESC and receiver in the base unit. Max thrust on the MAX is 29kg at 1,854W peak power, with an IP68 water rating. The Slim delivers 26.5kg thrust at 3.75kg minimum system weight — the highest power-to-weight ratio (7 N/KG) in the Foil Drive lineup, targeting performance-oriented riders who want responsiveness over runtime.

RIIFT's cassette goes all the way through the board from hull to deck, which the company claims adds meaningful stiffness to the structure rather than just occupying space in it. Each battery pack — offered in 2P, 3P, or 4P cell configurations — contains its own electronics, making swapping a complete unit replacement rather than just a cell swap. The Sport battery runs at 43.2V nominal with a 432Wh capacity, with approximately 30 minutes of runtime for wave riding with repeated paddle-back assists. The motor pod is longer and thinner than Foil Drive's unit, and sits on the mast in the same attachment position. Critically, the battery sits forward in the board — a deliberate balance decision to improve centre of mass and reduce pivot sensitivity once on foil.

Battery strategy: eight variants versus three modules

Foil Drive has taken an expansive approach to its battery lineup — eight variants across the MAX and Slim families, ranging from the compact Travel (designed to meet airline carry-on thresholds) through to the Endurance cells optimised for long downwind or wing sessions. The ESC and receiver are housed in the base unit itself, not the battery, meaning battery swaps are genuinely just cell swaps.

RIIFT inverts this architecture. Each battery pack contains its own ESC and receiver, making the hull cassette itself a relatively passive component. The upside is a theoretically simpler and cheaper base unit. The tradeoff is cost — owning multiple battery sizes means buying complete electronics units each time, not just cells. Early community commentary suggests RIIFT's system could become expensive if riders want the flexibility of multiple packs, and travel with lithium packs above 100Wh is already a logistical reality anyone buying in will need to manage carefully.

The board lock-in question

This is the starkest practical difference between the two systems and the most important one for a buyer to understand before committing.

Foil Drive works with what you have. If you own a foil board with a standard trench, or are willing to have one routed, you're in. There's no new board purchase required, no waiting for a specific shaper to join a partner programme, no obligation to replace a board you love.

RIIFT requires a purpose-built board. The cassette is a structural element that goes in at the shaping stage. You cannot retrofit RIIFT to an existing board. This is a meaningful commitment — you're buying into a board and a system simultaneously. The partner roster is strong: KT, Appletree, Sunova, Axis, SPG, Kalama, and a dozen others are already producing RIIFT-integrated shapes, and the 38-litre KT board reportedly comes in at 3.4kg with a deck pad — genuinely impressive for a powered board. But if your shaper of choice isn't on the list, or if you want a shape that doesn't yet exist in RIIFT's ecosystem, you wait.

RIIFT has indicated plans to sell the cassette system separately for shapers and technically capable DIY builders. This could open the ecosystem considerably — but it requires skills beyond what most riders bring to a board bay.

Pricing

Foil Drive publishes its pricing clearly: the Assist MAX system starts at AUD $7,750 and the Assist Slim at AUD $7,000. These figures are for the complete electronics package — motor, battery, controller, charger, hardware. The board is yours to source separately.

RIIFT had not published electronics pricing at launch. Community estimates suggest RIIFT-integrated boards from KT are expected in the AUD $3,000–$4,000 range for the board alone, with electronics packages additional. The total cost of entry — a RIIFT board plus the power system — could easily match or exceed Foil Drive's all-in price, particularly if multiple battery packs become desirable for longer sessions.

Who each system suits

Foil Drive suits you if: you already own a foil board and don't want to replace it; you ride multiple disciplines across several boards; you travel frequently and need granular control over battery Wh limits; you want a mature, proven system with wide community support; or you're a heavier rider (85kg+) wanting maximum available thrust.

RIIFT suits you if: you're buying a new board anyway and want the cleanest possible integration; board weight and hydrodynamic cleanliness matter to your surfing; you want a single board that works unpowered, assisted, or as a full eFoil; forward battery placement and improved balance on foil are priorities; or you're aligned with one of RIIFT's partner shapers and trust their specific shapes.

The verdict

Foil Drive has earned its position. It's refined, well-supported, and represents genuine engineering maturity across two generations of hardware. The retrofit model remains unmatched for flexibility, and the eight-battery ecosystem gives experienced riders genuine granularity over their sessions. These are real advantages that don't disappear when a new competitor appears.

RIIFT isn't trying to beat Foil Drive at its own game. It's making a fundamentally different bet: that the category matures into purpose-built integrated hardware, the way eFoils evolved away from bolt-on kits toward refined production boards. The forward battery placement, flush hull, and structural integration aren't marketing copy — they're design decisions a rider will feel.

The unanswered questions are significant. RIIFT's electronics pricing remains unpublished. Motor thrust figures are unconfirmed. Durability at IP68-equivalent levels hasn't been field-tested publicly. And the board lock-in is real — committing to RIIFT is committing to a specific shaper's vision of a board, not just an electronics system.

Our read: Foil Drive is the right answer today for the majority of riders, particularly those already invested in gear and those who travel. RIIFT is worth watching closely over the next six months, and could be the right answer for a rider purchasing their first dedicated assist board from scratch. The market just got competitive. That's good for everyone in it.
