And how your Armstrong mast fits into the picture
If you've been looking at getting into Foil Drive, chances are you've already hit the big question: which system? The Assist Slim, Assist MAX, and Fusion are all incredible — but they serve very different riders, and the right choice depends on how you foil, how much battery life you need, and whether you're planning to travel with your kit.
Here's how we break it down at Stonker.
Foil Drive Assist Slim — The Performance Weapon
The Assist Slim is the smallest, lightest system in the range, and it's built for advanced riders who prioritise feel over run time. Despite its compact size, it delivers serious thrust — enough to get you on foil quickly — but with smaller batteries by design, it's aimed at riders who don't need hours of riding per session.
This is the system for:
- Advanced surf foilers and prone riders
- Wingers and downwinders who already have efficient technique and just want a bump
- Riders who want the most minimal, performance-focused setup possible
- Anyone who values a lightweight kit above all else
Travelling with the Slim
The Assist Slim has a dedicated Slim Travel Battery option built right into the kit — one of its biggest advantages for travellers. It's designed to fit within airline carry-on battery limits, so you can take it on the plane without advance approval. If travel is a priority and you're a confident foiler who doesn't need all-day run time, the Slim is arguably the most travel-friendly complete system in the range.
Armstrong compatibility: The Slim uses the Universal Motor Pod and is compatible with AXIS and Project Cedrus integrated masts — but there is no Armstrong-specific integrated mast for the Slim. Armstrong riders would run it with the Universal Pod mount.

Foil Drive Assist MAX — The Versatile All-Rounder
The Assist MAX is the workhorse of the Foil Drive range. Powerful, versatile, and proven across surf, wing, and downwind foiling, it's the system that put Foil Drive on the map and remains one of the most complete setups in the electric foil assist world.
Running on the 40V battery system, the MAX gives you significantly more run time than the Slim and more thrust for heavier riders, bigger boards, and more demanding conditions. It's the sweet spot for most recreational and intermediate-to-advanced riders.
This is the system for:
- Riders who want serious versatility across multiple disciplines
- Surfers, wingers, downwinders, and SUP foilers alike
- Anyone who wants longer sessions without worrying about battery life
- Riders stepping into Foil Drive for the first time who want room to grow
Travelling with the MAX
The MAX Sport Travel Battery is purpose-built with airline carry-on limits in mind — meaning you can pack it in your carry-on and go. It's a separate add-on to the base kit, but for travellers it's an essential part of the package.
Armstrong compatibility: The MAX pairs with Armstrong foils using the Universal Motor Pod, which mounts cleanly to your existing Armstrong mast. There's no Armstrong-specific integrated mast for the MAX — but the Universal Pod delivers a clean, effective result.

Foil Drive Fusion + Armstrong Integrated Mast — The Ultimate Setup
The Fusion is Foil Drive's flagship, and when paired with the Armstrong Integrated Mast, it becomes one of the most refined foil assist setups available anywhere.
Rather than mounting a motor pod to the outside of your mast, the Armstrong Integrated Mast has the Fusion motor built directly into the mast profile itself. The result is cleaner hydrodynamics, less drag, a stiffer and more direct connection, and a setup that looks as purposeful as it performs. No external pod, no extra hardware — just a single, elegant integrated unit.
Running on the 43V architecture with the 860Wh Fusion battery included, the Fusion delivers more power, longer run times, and performance that edges into genuine e-foil territory on flat water — while still being a foil assist when the waves or wind show up.
This is the system for:
- Riders who want the absolute best performance and cleanest installation
- Armstrong foilers who want a purpose-built integrated setup
- Anyone who wants the most advanced system Foil Drive makes
- Riders who foil across multiple disciplines and want maximum versatility
Travelling with the Fusion
One thing to plan ahead for: the Fusion's 860Wh battery is above most airlines' standard carry-on threshold of 300Wh. Most carriers will approve it with advance notice, but it's worth contacting your airline before you travel. This doesn't rule out international trips — it just requires a bit more planning than the Slim or MAX travel batteries.
